Bytes & Pieces: A Youth Coding and Music Organization
Article written by Bytes &Pieces' founder, Julia Huang
How was Bytes and Pieces created?
I realized there was more to coding and music than just learning and creating.
I started Bytes and Pieces in order to share what I learned in two of my most favorite passions, learning how to code and how to compose music. As both of these fields are highly understudied in schools, I decided to start an organization that hosts workshops, events, contests, and more to provide a deeper or extra curriculum that explores topics in both computer science and music composition. We also hope to help increase diversity and inclusion, as minorities are highly underrepresented in both of these fields, and bring our workshops to under-resourced areas and around the world. Currently, we have had over 20+ mentors/curriculum developers/designers and 100+ student members.
What do students get from joining Bytes & Pieces?
Students can learn music theory/composition/history to create their own song about a story/experience/emotion. Can also enhance or learn coding skills in java, python, html, css, and a variety of other languages to create a coding project of their choice on a topic they are passionate about. They can use these coding skills to attend our hosted hackathons to meet teams and win prizes. Students will also learn Artificial Intelligence and machine learning skills to create/code a model that can solve real-world problems such as recognizing and classifying wild plant types.
These technology skills can be useful/helpful especially if students want to pursue a STEM or tech field in college/jobs.
How is the club organised?
Coding Contests: usually once or twice a year
Workshops: all in Eastern time. 30-60 min meeting 1-3 times a month on weekends.
How can students join? Do they have to live in a particular place?
Students can join by clicking on the Workshop Participant Interest Form to fill out a google form to show their interest for events/workshops in a topic of their choice (music, coding, artificial intelligence - choose 2 or 3 of them).
Our workshops are open and free to everyone in the world ages 11 and up.
What will happen once students sign up?
They will be added to a group email list and will prompt students to sign up for our discord and/or remind group. Every 1-7 days before a workshop we will send out a zoom link with workshop logistics.
